Daniel says: you got something on your nose.
Daniel says: I won a private bet with myself that I could make you touch yourface.
Sophie says: what do you win?
Sophie says: and what do you lose?
Daniel says: I win my self respect. If I lost I would've had to piss the bed tonight.
Sophie says: but you did lose
Sophie says: if you made the bet with yourself you both won and lost
Sophie says: because both are you
Sophie says: one of you must have bet that i wouldn't touch my face
Daniel says: DAMN!
Daniel says: But the rules of the bet stipulate that if I prove myself right I get my self respect, but if I prove myself wrong that I must forfeit. So you can bet with yourself and win.
Sophie says: No, that doesn't work
Sophie says: how do you decide whether you have proved yourself right or wrong?
Daniel says: because i say "I'm going to make Sophie touch her face - if she does I get my self respect, if she doesn't I piss the bed".
Sophie says: oh yeh, but then... how do you win your own self respect? you can't suddenly respect yourself because i touch my face!
Daniel says: that is a different argument unrelated to the point about whether I can win/lose a bet with myself.
Sophie says: ok, true, but it does raise the question of your motives for doing it. why not just reward yourself with what you would win anyway? whether it be a chocolate, a treat, or self-respect, rather than wager your happiness on an insignificant thing?
Daniel says: because I feel like I need to earn it.
Daniel says: Or maybe I don't feel I deserve it without risking it somehow.
Sophie says: Weird
/Daniel just sent you a nudge./
Daniel says: yep that's me
